Bungee for Feeder (see tip)
Hi Jay,

My wife and I recently attended the alpaca show in Springfield Mass. We are a new farm and have many decisions as to where our money should go. We were really contemplating the need versus the want for a hay feeder. While at the show I spoke to you and your staff about the feeders and we left with a 6’ double sided feeder. Aside from the digital scale it has been it has been the best item we have purchased from you. We are extremely impressed; there is very little waste on the ground and the alpacas love eating from it. Thanks so much to you and your knowledgeable staff! We look forward to doing more business with you in the future.

Hi Jay
STILL Loving the outside feeder - if inside and outside have hay they always Prefer to be outside!
What a great investment.

The hay saver feeders provide easy access to hay for your livestock.

The 4” x 4” mesh in the hay saver feeders prevents large quantities of hay from being pulled from the feeder (as happens with many conventional hay feeders) with a portion that ends up falling to the ground and wasted. The livestock has to work a little harder to get hay out of the hay saver feeder and therefore only small mouthfuls are pulled through the mesh and less falls to the ground and is wasted. Much of the hay that is dropped ends up in the feeder tray to be consumed later and not wasted at all.

Feeding livestock outdoors in the winter has benefits for the animals being out in the winter sun to absorb the vitamins from the suns ray. Feeding outdoors keeps the animals in the fresh air as opposed to in barns and reduces the potential for manure buildup in the barn as well.

Feeding hay from a hay saver feeder has many advantages over feeding hay on the ground or in the barn:
Less waste using hay saver feeders (up to 40%) verses weather losses from feeding on the ground
Less waste using hay saver feeders verses losses due to trampling and loafing on the hay on the
    ground
Less risk of parasite transference and overloading using hay saver feeder verses consuming hay that
    has been walked on
Less mess and spring clean-up time using hay saver feeders verses feeding on the ground

The double sided feeders are great for outdoor usage. The roof on the double sided feeders keeps the hay dry in nearly all weather conditions. The hay is off the ground and not being walked upon by the livestock. Each leg of the double sided feeders can be adjusted independently for any uneven ground surface. The 6’ double sided feeder accepts a complete average size (40 lbs) square hay bale therefore reducing the need to carry loose hay. Figure 1’ of length of feeder per head of livestock. IE a 6’ double sided feeder can easily service 6 animals (3 on each side).

The single sided feeders are a great tool to use in the barn or other covered areas. These feeders attach easily to any panel and adjust to fit the height of your animal. They can also be attached to a wall by drilling holes along the top rail and screwing the feeder to the wall. These lightweight feeders also serve as a great travel feeder for shows and fairs. Figure 2’ of feeder length per head of livestock. IE a 4’ feeder can easily service 2 animals.

The feeders come in a variety of lengths from two foot single sided feeders all the way up to eight foot single and double sided feeders. They are great for barns with limited space and many animals. The trays on the single and double sided feeders also serve as a convenient way to feed supplements to your animals.

The hay-saver feeders are great for feeding animals that may get stuck in the vertical bars of many conventional feeders. With the wire mesh animals are not able to get their heads into the middle of the feeder and as a result get stuck in a dangerous way.
Tips for use of the Hay Saver Feeders
There have been instances where the hay saver feeders have been implicated in hair loss on the noses of livestock. We have used the hay saver feeders on our farm for a number of years. We had experienced occasional hair loss on noses prior to using the hay saver feeders and have experienced the same since using them.

Here are some tips to reduce the risk of hair loss from the hay saver feeders:

1) Keep the feeders high enough - if the livestock are entering the mesh at an acute angle there is more chance of abrasion on the bridge of the nose from the mesh of the feeders. Taller animals are more likely to access low feeders at an acute angle.

2) Keep the feeders full - if the livestock are having to work and dig to access hay there is a greater risk of abrasion.

3) Have enough feeders - if too many animals are trying to access too few feeders they may become more aggressive at accessing the hay and may cause abrasion.

Other potential factors in hair loss on noses:
Zinc deficiency
Mange/Mites

Cold climate closure option:

1)The double sided feeders are supplied with a double ended thumb latch. However in wet cold climates the thumb latch can freeze in the winter making them inoperable. As an option we can supply a bungee cord in the proper length & strength to be used as show in the photo to the left. Please add this item to your order at the time of ordering. Jay Ward
