CameliDynamicsLlama Halters Buying a halter that fits properly is possibly the most important thing you can do for the safety and comfort of your camelid. Halter fit profoundly affects your camelid’s attitude and performance. For safe halter fit, the nose band must rest on bone and stay there even under adverse conditions, i.e. when your llama/alpaca bucks on the lead, resists being tied, bolts or becomes tangled in a stake line. A halter should be comfortable and should not interfere with your camelid’s ability to yawn, eat or ruminate. A halter should also serve as an effective tool of communication particularly if your animal is in training. The Zephyr halter has the maximum amount of adjustability in both the nose band and the crown piece. It is proportioned so that it will stay well up on the nose bone for your animal’s safety when properly fitted. The Zephyr halter is also designed with side rings on the nose band that can be used for leading. Signals given in this location can often prevent negative leading behaviors from developing or fix habitual resistance when it exists. Get one of each size and you can properly fit every animal on your property. Halter fit is covered extensively in Marty’s book, The Camelid Companion (ch 8), and in most of the videos. Alpaca halter colors: black, brown, red, green, blue, purple, white, fawn and rainbow (combination of purple, blue, green, and red). |

![]() New Halter SizingWe are very proud of the versatility, safety and workmanship of the Zephyr Halter, which continually gets rave reviews. However, based on customer requests for a wider range of fit, we are moving from a two–size system to a three–size system. Rest assured, the new sizing is only going to improve the utility and versatility of the Zephyr Halter. With the three–size system the Zephyr Halter will fit all llamas or alpacas without the need for special orders to accommodate extra large or extra small. The old sizing system had two sizes (Small: fits from 4–5 months to one year, and Medium/Large: fits from one year to adult). The following is a guide for the new three–size system. New Sizestherefore, so sizing guidelines are approximate. There is also a deliberate overlap between the sizes. If you own one of each size halter of the appropriate species, you can fit any alpaca or llama safely and comfortably. Following are some guidelines to help you transition from the old system to the new one:
Fitting The Zephyr HalterFitting your new halter is no different from the old style and still critical for safety, comfort & effectiveness.animal. Pre–fitting the halter makes it more likely to get stuck on the nose before sliding far enough up on the nose bone. will not slip off the boney part of the nose. This is going to be very snug (almost tight) for animals wearing the small halter and can be slightly looser for animals wearing the medium or large halter. be able to slide a finger inside the noseband for small and medium halters and two fingers for animals wearing large halters. |
